CGAIE Fall Artist Workshop

More photos >>

On Saturday, September 18, 2010, CGAIE held an artist training workshop in Hood River for all the artists on our newly released 2010-12 Artist Catalog. Both new and returning artists gathered to meet, some for the first time, and get inspired as teaching artists.

The training offered two workshops. The morning session was “Communication with Classroom Teachers through your Online Portfolio”, presented by Deborah Vaughn from the Oregon Arts Commission and Kendra Yao from Right Brain Initiative. Deb and Kendra introduced artists to examples of ways to share ideas and show their work with students via a blog-based portfolio. The artists created artwork and took pictures of the work and Deb and Kendra walked the group through posting the work to a blog. Please visit fofofolio.wordpress.com to see images and explanations of the process.

We took a break for an elegant lunch at the home of one of our board members. Thank you Robin for opening your beautiful home to us!

The afternoon session started with a panel discussion on “How to Design an Integrated Art Residency”. Susan Henness, CGAIE board member and Principal at May Street Elementary moderated panel members - Dennis McCauley, Principal at Mid Valley Elementary, Barbara McDonough, Parent of a Westside Elementary student, Carol Birdsell, Teacher at Cascade Locks School, Shelley Toon and Kristin Walrod, both Teaching Artists.

The panel fielded questions including what they thought defined a successful integrated residency and offered thoughts on the importance of preplanning and assessment meetings. Artists commented later that it was beneficial to hear support from schools and parents for arts residencies. Thank you panelists!

The artists then broke into 4 work groups with the task of designing their own sample residency. The groups were led by CGAIE Arts Advocates (teachers in the 4 county school area who have been identified as advocates for the arts and CGAIE partners.)

Each group selected a grade level, subject area, art and other core subject content standards and ways to assess the success of the residency. Each group had a presenter who shared their residency with the group.

I want to thank the artists who attended for their commitment to learn more as teaching artists and their enthusiasm and participation in our workshop.
We all learned a lot and had a great time. Bravo!
